Blessing Hawaiian Style

Just like the purification ceremonies in Japan before the construction of a building, it is very common in Hawaii for a Kahu to bless a project upon commencement. Quite often, a Kahu will be asked to bless a home and its family for their well being. A ritual sprinkling of sea water or water mixed with pa`akai is called “pi kai”. It is used to purify an area or person from spiritual contamination and remove harmful influences.
You may also perform this ritual for your home. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of pa`akai into a bowl containing 4 cups of water. Recite a prayer and bless yourself and household. Dip your hand into the bowl of water and run your hands along side of your head, starting at the temples. Sprinkle water on your shoulders to ease the burden that you carry. Dip hands and spread over your heart to purify and cleanse your feelings.
Open every door, cabinet and drawer. Start at the back of the house and work forward. Use a Ti leaf, or any other large leaf to sprinkle the water. If none is available, you may use your hands. When blessing a two story house, start from the highest point and work your way back to the entrance of your home.
